6 tips for Pet Wellness Month

It’s Pet Wellness Month! We love this month over at Banfield because we’re big believers in preventive petcare. Not only does preventive petcare help you stay on top of your pet’s wellness, it’s also a smart financial strategy (more on that later).

Below are six of our favorite preventive petcare services.

Dental health

Mouths are good indicators of your pet’s overall health, and an unhealthy mouth can lead to painful and unpleasant health issues down the road. Brushing your pet’s teeth at home and bringing them in for their regularly scheduled dental appointments can help you and your veterinarian pinpoint and address any dental concerns.

Parasite/tick/flea prevention

Yearlong parasite prevention is incredibly important. Leaving dogs or cats vulnerable to tick, flea, or mosquito bites can lead to serious ailments such as heartworm disease and Lyme disease, which can be fatal for dogs if left untreated, and there’s no current treatment for heartworm disease in cats. Don’t run the risk of letting your sweet pet get sick — prevention is key.

Body weight

Your pet’s weight affects their overall wellness, health, and energy levels. Extra weight on your pet can cause ailments such as diabetes, joint issues, and more. Ensuring your pet eats a quality diet with the right serving sizes and keeping them active with regular exercise can help them maintain a healthy body weight.

Vaccinations

Pet vaccinations support lifelong disease prevention. There are lots of diseases out there that your furry friend can contract and some of them are fatal, like rabies and distemper. Ensuring that your pet is kept up-to-date with their regularly scheduled vaccinations not only helps prevent disease, but also the transmission of diseases to other pets.

Skin + coat grooming

Staying on top of your pet’s grooming helps keep their coat shiny and silky, and it can also help you spot cuts, rashes, lumps, or nasty little buggers like ticks or fleas. We’ve got helpful tips on how to bathe your dog and cat over here

Spaying and neutering

In addition to preventing unwanted pregnancies, spaying and neutering can also help with a slew of other important things such as preventing testicular or ovarian cancer and reducing the risk of prostate disease. If you’ve got questions about what to expect with your dog's or cat’s spaying or neutering, we have a helpful video that gives you the lowdown.
