Common questions

A:Mites are teeny tiny parasites that can cause irritation, fur loss, and other pesky symptoms. Two specific mites — sarcoptic mange mites and demodectic mange mites — can cause mange, a skin disease that needs to be diagnosed and treated by your veterinarian.
A:You’ll need to see a veterinarian to help get rid of mange. They’ll be able to determine the specific mite that caused your pet’s condition, as well as prescribe the right medication(s) to treat it.
A:There are two main types of mange in pets: sarcoptic mange and demodectic mange. Sarcoptic mange (also known as scabies) can easily be passed from pet to people and vice versa. Most demodectic mange is not contagious from pets to people, but there is one species that is.
A:This depends on the specific type of mite and severity of mange. Your vet will be able to identify the mite and prescribe medication to treat your pet. Avoid home “remedies,” as none of these are backed by scientific evidence.
A:The first signs of mange in cats are often intense itching and scratching, red skin, and bald patches.
A:Yes! Mange in cats is curable. However, it requires the proper treatment and precautionary measures (keep pets separate, wash bedding, etc.) to make sure your cat isn’t reinfected.
A:Depending on the complexity of the infection, mange can cause serious issues for your sweet cat. It’s important to see your vet at the first signs of symptoms so they can start them on a proper treatment plan.
