One of the most important steps to take, both within the first 6 months and throughout your puppy’s life, is making sure your puppyBFF is up to date on their vaccinations. Here’s a guide to the vaccinations your puppy really needs, when your puppy needs them, and what to know about costs.

Core and non-core vaccinations for puppies

Vaccines fall into one of two categories: core and noncore.

Core vaccines are the ones we recommend for the majority of puppies, based largely on their health. They are vital to ensure the well-being of both you and your BFF.

Noncore vaccines are recommended based on your puppy’s lifestyle, and sometimes on your geographical location. Talk to your veterinary team about non-core vaccines if any of these activities are a constant in your puppy’s life:

Frequent visits to dog parks or doggy daycare
Going on hikes
Spending a long time outdoors in the yard
Visits to the groomer

	Core	Noncore
Distemper/Parvo combination These diseases cause a variety of issues like lethargy, fever and eye discharge, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting.
Bordetella (Kennel Cough) This infection can cause upper respiratory symptoms.
Rabies This disease is fatal for mammals, including humans.
Adenovirus (CAV-1) Canine Hepatitis. It causes fever, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Parainfluenza Highly infectious and causes coughing and sneezing.
Lyme Disease Transmitted by ticks, it can cause fever and joint inflammation.
Leptospirosis Causes kidney and liver disease and can be spread to humans.
Canine Influenza Causes respiratory disease that can lead to serious pneumonia.
